However, refering to a political point made by Berta - will people in certain areas become more exposed to harm and political pressure, or will they be able to unite and become a movement that can free themselves of political harnesses of free speech? We are getting into politics here; however, I think, in the long run, it's unavoidable. I read Global Voices Manifesto and consider the most crucial point, and the one most likely to revolutionize the way we live and percieve the world, is the one about voices no longer being controlled by the media. I liked very much the way he articulated the importance of opening up our classrooms to the outside world and connecting youth so that they could learn from each other by being engaged in different meaningful projects. He highlighted the fact that the emerging web 2.0 tools empower students to express their views and become responsible and caring global citizens. I think, we educators indeed can develop different skills by taking advantage of the Net, such as critical thinking skills, collaborative skills and no doubt we can even develop our students' empathy. I firmly believe that highlighting the importance of ethical behaviour is a must when getting students engaged in online activities. Here goes a link to the Global Voices Manifesto (http://tinyurl.com/37j2rm) I usually discuss with my students the content of this important document before getting them involved in telecollaborative projects.
